| Welcome to
SHOUBUKAN DOJO
Welcome to Shoubukan dojo, a community dedicated to the study of classical martial arts arising from Japan’s warrior tradition. Through practice our members develop fitness and self-defense skills, but
also much deeper things: a revolutionary increase in self-confidence, a true inner strength, and an integration of
mind and body that serves them in all areas of life.
The journey is a challenging one, but the benefits are yours. They will immeasurably enrich your life, and impact those around you.
PHILOSOPHY OF SHOUBUKAN DOJO
Our philosophy is simple. Train in martial arts to become the most fit, most focused, most relaxed and balanced
person that you can possibly be. Forge your life, like a sword, into something beautiful and sharp. Watch as the
practice refines and transforms you. Everything that you have wanted to seem to other people, now truly become.
True martial art study forces us to face and break through our self-imposed limitations.
THE METHOD OF AIKIDO AT SHOUBUKAN DOJO: The Aikido that is practised in the Aikido Dojos is called Aikikai Aikido. That is the original form of Aikido as introduced by the founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969).
The line that is being followed is the Santos line. Meaning that within Aikikai Aikido the style and methodology of Luis Santos Renshi (6th dan) is practised. Santos Renshi is proficient in a very parctical Aikido, effective as a martial art and combining all principles and aspects of Aikido, “the way of inner harmony”. This style is acknowledged and respected by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai headquarters in Kyoto Japan also known as( Honbu Dojo) and other Aikido organisations worldwide.
MEMBERSHIP AT SHOUBUKAN DOJO
Membership and instruction are privileges not rights. We do not accept people merely because they want to join. We must be convinced that the applicant will produce a net positive value for the Art. We invest substantial amounts of our time and energy into your initial training; it is only worthwhile if you are in it for the long haul. We are not interested in "tourists" or "collectors." To distinguish the serious seeker from the casual, we require you to attend and observe three training sessions. During this period, we will talk with you and get a feel for whether you will fit with the group. If we think that you will contribute to both the dojo and the Art, we will provide you with the appropriate membership forms and waivers, give you information about how to acquire your equipment, and invite you to begin training at the next regular session.
